Most small tunnel rigs carry one hydraulic rock drill on an articulated boom. The boom can reach the entire tunnel face and sidewalls without moving the carrier every few holes. The whole machine is narrow enough (often under 1.5 m wide) to pass through existing small openings or to be transported in a service cage.


Power can be diesel (for sites without grid electricity), electric (clean and quiet), or dieselelectric dual power. Electric versions are common for long tunnels where ventilation is a concern.

Carrier and Mobility

 

Diesel or electric? Electric rigs are cheaper to run and zero emissions, but you need to manage a trailing cable. Diesel rigs are more independent but produce fumes – you need good ventilation. Dual‑power (diesel drive, electric drill hydraulics) is the best of both worlds.

 

Tyres or tracks? Tracks handle rough ground better and distribute weight, but they're slower and wear out on concrete tunnel floors. Rubber tyres with a good tread are often fine. Some small rigs use foam‑filled tyres to eliminate flats.

 

Gradeability – look for at least 14° (25%) grade. Small tunnels sometimes have steep inclines.

Q: How small can the tunnel be for this rig to work?

A: Most small rigs need a minimum cross‑section of about 2.2 m wide × 2.2 m high to operate comfortably. If your tunnel is smaller than that, you're looking at handheld drilling or a custom ultra‑compact rig (some Chinese manufacturers offer 1.2 m wide electric rigs for mine entryways). For 2.5 m × 2.5 m and above, a standard small rig works fine.

Q: Can one rig handle both drilling and bolting?

A: Yes – if you choose a rig with a bolt handling attachment. However, a dedicated bolting rig is better if you do mostly bolting. For a small contractor who does both, a "drilling + bolting" combo rig is a reasonable compromise. Look for a rig that accepts both a rock drill (for blast holes) and a bolt feeder (for bolts). Changeover takes 30–60 minutes.

Q: What's the drilling speed in hard rock?

A: With a 9–11 kW hydraulic rock drill, you can drill a 45 mm hole through 150 MPa granite at about 0.8–1.0 m per minute. Through 80 MPa limestone, around 1.5–2.0 m per minute. These are real field numbers, not lab conditions. So a 3.5 m deep hole takes 2–4 minutes depending on rock.

Q: Do I need an air compressor on the rig?

A: No – hydraulic rock drills don't need compressed air for drilling (they use water flush to clear cuttings). However, if you also use a down‑the‑hole hammer for very hard rock or large holes, then you need compressed air. Some small rigs have an optional onboard screw compressor. In most small tunnels, a separate trailer‑mounted compressor is cheaper and easier to maintain.

Q: How often do I change drill bits and steels?

A: Bits: 80-150holes for a carbide button bit in hard rock, more in soft rock. Regrinding can extend life.

Steels (drill rods): 100–200holes, depending on rock abrasiveness and straightness. Bent rods waste energy and break faster.

Keep spares on site – a broken bit or stuck rod stops production.

Q: What about dust? Tunnels get dusty fast.

A: Most rigs have a water injection system through the drill steel – water flows down the centre of the rod and out of the bit, capturing dust at the hole collar. You need a clean water supply (can be a tank on the rig or a hose from the tunnel water line). For dry drilling (if water is not allowed), you need a dust collector – but that's messy and less common.
